Westies in Need - WiN
|
Adoption InformationThank you for your interest in
helping homeless Westies. Please read all the info below and then, if you are
ready, move on to our adoption application info, which is below.
If you
are drawn to Westies because, "they are so cute!" please be advised that their
looks can be deceptive. The West Highland white terrier was bred to hunt and
kill vermin in the Scottish highlands. He is tough, hardy, independent, and
tenacious. This makes him a wonderful companion for those who appreciate and
are charmed by the terrier temperament, but possibly a problem for the person
who wants a gentle-natured little dog bred primarily for cuddling.
We receive more qualified applications from very fine homes than we have
Westies to place, and it may take several months to put the right person with
the right dog.

We do understand that people often are
looking for dogs from more than one source and may find a pet before we have
one available. If you acquire a dog from another source, please let us know, so
that we can put your application in our inactive file. It will save your time
and ours. We also ask you to remember that we are a volunteer network, not
a kennel or a shelter. We cannot hold dogs for people, and if we call you, we
need a timely response.
Many come into rescue frightened, but within a
few months of living a real Westie's life - you will begin to watch your Westie
blossom before your very eyes! It's amazing and a moment our homes cherish. The
pets soon come to know that YOUR hands would NEVER harm them and THEIR bowls
are ALWAYS filled. If you have another Westie in your home already, your Westie
will teach the new Westie what life is all about and what they can and can't
get away with.
Gotta love this breed. They are sooooooooooo
smart!

Thank you again for your
interest in helping homeless Westies. If you have read the above and are ready
to move on the next step in the application process, please complete the
adoption application and return it via regular mail or e-mail. All the contact
info will be on your Adoption Application
|
Step 1: Click here for
Adoption Application. Please fill it
out and mail or e-mail it back to us. Your application is filed until a dog
becomes available for adoption and a home visit is scheduled. All approved
applications are kept on file for 6 months (We ask that anyone who applied to
adopt a Westie and, subsequently, acquires another dog to notify us so that we
can remove them from our files)
Step 2: When a rescued Westie is ready
for adoption each approved application is checked to see which one(s) most
closely match the needs of the dog.
Step 3: We schedule a home visit
with you. WiN calls the applicant(s) selected and arranges an interview between
the Westie and potential new family. Step 5: The best family for that
particular Westie is chosen after an evaluation of all factors.
Step 6:
The new family signs the Adoption Contract and provides a donation which goes
to cover program expenses.
