In the spring of 2015, Maisie came into my life. She was in a puppy mill most of her life.
When Maisie arrived with Elizabeth from WIN, I got choked up. Elizabeth asked if I were alright. I couldn’t get over the resemblance to Ellie, another Westie whom I lost months before Maisie’s arrival. Maisie’s tail was but a stub, just like Ellie’s. We later determined Maisie came from the same bloodline as Ellie. It’s no wonder she shared similar characteristics to Ellie. Still, Maisie was unique in her own right.
Maisie was a strong girl but come Christmas 2018; she couldn’t walk. After a few x-rays and consultations, our Vet told me she would be lame and may need corrective surgery. From that day, I carried Maisie in good, bad, cold, and hot weather. I didn’t want her to experience pain anytime or salt stings during winter.
This morning, I carried Maisie for the last time to our Vet. I know everyone here knows the grief I am feeling now. But when I was carrying Maisie and sitting with her, I could sense she knew it was time. Maisie had been ill and was deteriorating each day.
No matter what we (The Vet and I) did, she wasn’t improving, and this morning I didn’t see that fighting spirit I had in the days leading up. Maisie was 15 years old, and I was blessed to have her in my life for 7 wonderful years.
RIP, my little girl. Thank you for your love and for those little nose licks I have come to love.
I will miss you so very much.
Your Dad
