“Changing Lives, One Westie at a Time”6

Declan "Burger" McCann

I have always wanted a Westie to call my own, but was waiting for the right time, a good breeder (and the right backyard really). On February 14, 2010 we were told by a breeder that three Westies were born, and we could come and pick one out. After lots of "baby pictures", Grant and I met the pups. On April 10, 2010, weighing in at 2.3lbs we brought home the most handsome pup I had ever seen, we named him Declan.

Declan was so full of life and full of attitude. When we spoke to him, he always had an intense gaze and would tilt his head in each direction as if he was responding to what was being said. He loved to play, he could roll down car windows, and loved everyone and every dog...especially his many female canine friends. Besides his trips to the park, one of his favourites was the car ride to Pet Smart, but I soon learned that he would need to be frisked before leaving the store; as he managed to steal a plush hamburger and a rubber chicken without me or anyone else seeing until he was safe in the car... he couldn't resist squeeking it, which led to him being caught! We nick named him "Burger".

October 7, 2010 was the day that changed our lives, and his. He started to have seizures, but were not ordinary and were severe. He was confused and we were all scared. He became extremely sick, suffering a great deal of brain damage. My Declan forgot things that he once knew how to do, and he couldn't go for long walks anymore. After thousands of dollars, and 12 pills a day and no exact diagnosis, Declan began to decompensate again. On October 18th, 2010 and only 8 months old, Grant and I made the most difficult decision we have ever had to make. It was not fair to our little pup to live this life the way he was, he deserved to be at peace.

Declan will always have a large piece of our hearts. He leaves behind his two feline buddies, Mojee and Lekkie, as well as his aunts and Grandma and Grandpa.

We love you Burger. Mommy and Daddy (Kathy and Grant)
